According to the 2000 census, South Dakota's population included some 62,283 American Indians, or 8.3% of the total state population—the 3rd-highest percentage among the 50 states. Rapid City has a large number of Indian population. As of 2000, the black population was 4,685, up from 3,000 recorded in the 1990 census. The estimated number of Asians residing in South Dakota was 4,378. Pacific Islanders numbered 261. As of 2000, there were 307,309 Germans, 115,292 Norwegian, 78,481 Irish, 53,2141 English, and 35,655 Dutch. In 2000, the number of Hispanics and Latinos was 10,903, or 1.4% of the population.
